Backyard Bar Mitzvahs
“Today, You Are a Man. Tomorrow, You Are a Viral Sensation.”
The Feinberg family of suburban New Jersey went above and beyond to celebrate their son Max’s coming-of-age by turning their backyard into a spectacle that some guests described as “Las Vegas meets Old Testament.” Complete with laser lights, rented falcons, and a DJ who only plays klezmer remixes of TikTok hits, Max’s Bar Mitzvah left the neighborhood both awestruck and lightly traumatized.
“I said I wanted something chill,” said Max, sipping grape soda from a custom chalice shaped like Moses. “Next thing I know, I’m riding in on a camel named DJ Sinai.”
The Torah portion was delivered via drone. The Haftorah? Screen-shared on a Jumbotron built over the neighbor’s shed. When Max recited his blessings, a fog machine activated, and the Rabbi–imported from Brooklyn–temporarily vanished in mist, only to reappear on a trampoline.
“I’ve conducted over 200 Bar Mitzvahs,” said Rabbi Goldstein. “But this is the first where I had to compete with a laser tag station and a freestyle rap battle between uncles.”
The event’s theme–“Mazel Tov: The Musical”–included pyrotechnics and interpretive dancers dressed as famous prophets. Moses did a backflip. Isaiah moonwalked.
Neighbors were less thrilled. “They asked if they could borrow our Wi-Fi,” said local dad Keith. “Then blew out the fuse box syncing lights to a dubstep Havdalah.”
Despite complaints, the party went off “miraculously,” according to Aunt Sheila. “Except for when the falcon mistook the caterer’s toupee for prey.”
Max now has 14,000 new Instagram followers and a custom NFT of his Bar Mitzvah montage. He plans to sell it to fund his next milestone: a backyard driver’s ed rave.
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
