At the Midtown Anime Expo, 33-year-old foam-smith Darren “D-Mech” Crumley arrived in a handmade Gundam suit so large it required four handlers, a dolly, and emotional support from a nearby Power Ranger.
“This is how I express my truth,” Darren said, as his shoulder-mounted LED cannon blinded a hot dog vendor.
The suit, constructed from EVA foam, PVC, and a little too much ambition, jammed three escalators and caused a brief evacuation of the snack court.
Transit police intervened after Darren tried to enter the subway shouting, “The battle must continue underground!”
He now faces minor charges and major fan respect. His GoFundMe for “Bigger Boots, Bigger Justice” has raised $1,200 and a used segway.
Darren plans to debut a 17-foot Evangelion build at the next convention. The city braces itself.
