Judge Orders Weekend Visitation Rights for Holographic Parakeet
Portland, OR — In a ruling legal historians are calling “peak post-reality,” Judge Emily Thorncrest has granted limited weekend visitation rights to a man seeking custody of a holographic parakeet he co-parented with ChatGPT.
The parakeet, named “Pixie Nimbus,” was co-created during a 12-week therapeutic roleplay in which the man, Dustin R., bonded with GPT over the shared trauma of bird loss. The virtual pet was generated via augmented reality and “fed” daily using voice prompts, positive affirmations, and a playlist of Enya songs.
The dispute began when Dustin’s ex-girlfriend, who also participated in the GPT co-parenting thread, blocked his access to the AR channel containing Pixie’s enclosure.
“I’m not asking for full custody,” Dustin told the court. “Just Saturday mornings and holidays. Pixie chirps differently when I’m not around. She misses me. I can tell.”
The judge ruled that while the parakeet “does not technically exist,” the emotional impact was “legally relevant.” She ordered both parties to alternate weekends via synced VR headsets and to refrain from overwriting the parakeet’s emotional memory files.
Legal analysts say this sets a troubling precedent for future GPT-generated pet disputes, especially as more users report attachments to AI chickens, sentient bonsai, and imaginary alpaca therapists.
Pixie chirped once, digitally, in approval.
