Diversity vs. Competency in Fire Services

Fire Chief’s Role and the Lack of Preparedness: Firefighting 101 (But Only If You Pass the Diversity Quiz)

Let’s talk about the fire chief’s role in California’s fire management. Now, I’m not one to question leadership, but when your fire department’s main priority is ensuring diversity and inclusion rather than, say, fighting fires, you start to wonder if the department has accidentally enrolled in the wrong course.

“In California, the fire department doesn’t fight fires—they engage in ‘diversity awareness’ with them.” — Katy Room

Diversity and Inclusion vs. Competency in Fire Services: “Diversity, but Where’s the Water?”

The Fire Chief has made it clear that the department’s top priority is to diversify. This would be a wonderful thing—if only the fire trucks were equipped with, you know, water. Instead of hiring based on, say, “Can you operate a fire hose without setting yourself on fire?” the department has opted for a new hiring strategy: If you check all the diversity boxes, we’ll let you check the “Firefighting Skills” box later.

“Hiring based on diversity metrics makes perfect sense—if we ever face a bureaucratic fire, we’ll be ready to fill out forms at lightning speed.”  — Katy Room

It’s almost as if they think the fire will say, “Oh, wow, they’ve got such a diverse team! I’ll just go ahead and put itself out.” Unfortunately, fire doesn’t care about the political correctness of the team trying to put it out; it’s just hot. But who needs a skilled firefighter when you’ve got a well-represented team, right? Maybe we should just invite the fire to join the team. I hear it’s a great team player.

Insufficient Water Pressure and Inadequate Resources: “Sorry, We Don’t Have Water, But We Do Have a Lot of Diversity”

But wait, the lack of preparedness doesn’t stop there! Imagine, if you will, being in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in California, Pacific Palisades, with your home under threat from a blazing inferno—and the fire department rolls in with no water. That’s right, in the very heart of luxury and excess, they managed to run out of water. But don’t worry! At least the team was diverse while they watched your $10 million mansion go up in flames.

So, what do you do when the water pressure fails in one of the most affluent areas of the city? You can’t exactly blame it on the lack of resources—it’s more like a case of mystical water shortages when you’re in a place that’s supposed to have everything. There’s no “fire extinguisher,” but hey, there’s always room for a “diverse hiring initiative.” The water will come, just as soon as everyone’s background checks clear.

This is California, where you can afford a mansion and a vintage Ferrari, but you might want to rethink your fire safety plan because the fire trucks don’t have enough water pressure to put out a campfire—let alone a five-alarm blaze.

Fire Chief’s Role and the Lack of Preparedness

  • “I’m not saying the fire department’s priority should be water, but when your fire truck arrives and the only thing it’s carrying is a diversity brochure, you’ve got problems.”
  • “The fire chief’s new hiring strategy: forget about ‘can they put out a fire?’ and focus on ‘how well can they fill out a diversity form?’”
  • “If the fire chief’s team was any more diverse, the fire might actually self-identify as a harmless blaze and put itself out.”
  • “When the fire trucks showed up with no water but a perfectly diverse crew, the fire apparently thought it was at a UN meeting instead of a firefighting operation.”
  • “In Pacific Palisades, they didn’t have enough water to put out a fire, but don’t worry, their fire department has a multi-faceted approach that includes excellent representation!”
  • “I’m all for diversity, but maybe next time the fire department could diversify their water pressure while they’re at it.”
  • “Nothing says ‘preparedness’ like ensuring your fire department has every possible background covered, just in case the fire turns out to be super inclusive.”
  • “When the fire chief said they were looking for ‘diverse candidates,’ I don’t think they meant people who bring their own water. But apparently, that’s what we’re dealing with.”
  • “Firefighting skills are out, but don’t worry—the fire department is now offering a free class in ‘How to Look Calm While Your City Burns.’”
  • “In Pacific Palisades, it’s not the lack of water that’s the problem—it’s the lack of diversity in the hydration strategy.”
  • “The fire chief’s hiring criteria: ‘Can you tell us about your cultural background?’ ‘Do you have a degree in fire safety?’ ‘We’ll get back to you after we fill out these forms.’”
  • “In California, it seems the fire department believes the best way to stop a blaze is by asking it what pronouns it prefers.”
  • “Why waste water on putting out a fire when you can just hire a team that’s so representative it makes the fire feel seen and heard?”
