Space Race 2.0: Who Will Build the First Moon Outpost?
Spoiler—It’s Probably Amazon Prime!
By Buzz Aldrone – A hard-hitting journalist with a passion for space and a mild obsession with conspiracy theories about the Moon being a soundstage.
A New Era of Lunar Colonialism Begins
Move over, Neil Armstrong—there’s a new breed of space pioneers, and they come armed with corporate logos, bureaucratic red tape, and Elon Musk’s Twitter tantrums. The question isn’t if humanity will return to the Moon—it’s who will get there first and what god-awful branding it will carry.
NASA dreams of scientific research, China envisions lunar supremacy, SpaceX wants to build an interplanetary truck stop, and Amazon? Well, they just want faster delivery times for your MoonRock™ protein bars.
“NASA’s Artemis program is taking forever. At this point, my grandma has a better chance of reaching the Moon using a stairlift.” – Jim Gaffigan
But with multiple players in the game, the real challenge isn’t reaching the Moon—it’s surviving the galactic HOA meetings that will inevitably spring up.
NASA: The Turtle in a Race Against Rocket-Fueled HaresIf there’s one thing NASA excels at, it’s stretching out deadlines like a rubber band holding together a 1960s-era Apollo lander. Artemis is technically in motion, but at the pace of a DMV queue in slow motion.
“We’re taking a methodical approach,” said a NASA spokesperson, shuffling a stack of paperwork stamped DO NOT LAUNCH UNTIL 2099. “Safety and precision are our top priorities.”
Translation? NASA might plant a flag on the Moon again someday, but by then, Jeff Bezos will already be charging people rent for the air they breathe at the Lunar Welcome Center.
China: When in Doubt, Build a Secret Base
China, on the other hand, is treating the Moon like a Monopoly board they just bought out. Their Chang’e program is sending rovers, landers, and, presumably, a fleet of bureaucrats ready to claim the lunar surface with a giant ‘Property of the CCP’ sticker.
“We are committed to peaceful cooperation,” stated a Chinese space official while unveiling blueprints labeled Top Secret Lunar Military Base (Definitely Not for Missiles).
If their track record holds, expect a Moonbase with bullet trains, surveillance drones, and a social credit score kiosk before NASA finishes debating what color their space suits should be.
SpaceX: Musk’s Lunar Timeshare Scheme
Elon Musk has a vision. It’s bold. It’s ambitious. It’s slightly insane.
“I’m 100% committed to putting people on the Moon,” Musk declared in a live-streamed Tesla Cybertruck stunt that ended in minor explosions. “Starship will get us there, and then we’ll terraform it into a casino where Dogecoin is the only accepted currency.”
“Elon Musk says he’ll colonize Mars or die trying. Those are literally the only two options.” – Jimmy Fallon
Musk’s strategy appears to be launching so many rockets at once that one of them is bound to reach the Moon out of sheer statistical probability. If that fails, he might just claim he invented the Moon and start charging for lunar parking.
Amazon Prime Moon: Free 2-Day Shipping on Oxygen (for Members Only)
Meanwhile, Amazon has entered the space race with Blue Origin, the company that gave us the world’s first slightly phallic rocket.
Jeff Bezos, not to be outdone by Musk, announced his plan for Amazon Prime Moon, a fully automated lunar colony designed for maximum efficiency and absolutely no worker breaks.
“Humanity must live among the stars,” Bezos proclaimed. “And when they do, they should be able to get a drone-delivered toothbrush within 48 hours.”
Insider reports suggest the first Moon base will include a Whole Foods, an Amazon fulfillment center, and an Alexa device that will refuse to work until you accept new Terms & Conditions.
Russia: We Swear We Have a Rocket Somewhere
Lurking in the shadows is Russia, which recently announced a renewed interest in lunar exploration. However, given Roscosmos’ track record, there’s a 60% chance their lunar lander will accidentally end up in Belarus.
“Russia is still a leading space power,” a spokesperson insisted before checking if their rocket funding had been converted into rubles or potatoes.
If Russia does make it, expect their Moon outpost to be held together with Soviet-era duct tape and a questionable amount of vodka.
Bureaucracy vs. Billionaires: Who Wins?
So, who will win this grand cosmic land grab? Will it be the cautious bureaucrats of NASA, the single-minded engineers of China, the meme-powered chaos of Musk, or the unstoppable logistics of Bezos?
Odds are, none of them will make it before some rogue Redditor sneaks onto a SpaceX launch and claims the Moon in the name of r/wallstreetbets.
Until then, the Moon remains an unclaimed celestial suburb waiting for its first HOA. And when that happens, expect the first rule to be: No Lawn Gnomes in Zero Gravity.
15 Observations on the Moon Race
- NASA’s Artemis program is going so slowly that by the time they get to the Moon, the first settlers will already be complaining about rent prices.
- Elon Musk says he wants to make Mars a multi-planetary civilization, but at this rate, his SpaceX rockets are more likely to just become high-speed delivery drones for DoorDash.
- China’s Moon plans are so ambitious that their first lunar rover is already being used to make high-speed rail connections to Jupiter.
- Jeff Bezos doesn’t just want to reach the Moon—he wants to turn it into a fulfillment center where astronauts are required to sprint from crater to crater with 30-second bathroom breaks.
- Russia is reportedly planning a Moon mission, but given their track record, they might accidentally land in a Siberian forest and claim they discovered a new planet.
- NASA scientists are debating what the first permanent lunar structure should be. My vote? A McDonald’s. Because nothing says ‘advanced civilization’ like a glowing golden arch visible from Earth.
- If Amazon builds the first Moon base, expect your Prime membership to include oxygen… but only if you pay for the upgraded plan.
- Elon Musk has promised that his lunar colony will run entirely on Dogecoin. So the first economy on the Moon might collapse every time a Reddit post goes viral.
- China says their Moon base will be used strictly for research—which is the same thing every Bond villain says right before unveiling a giant laser.
- Russia’s space agency says they’re fully capable of reaching the Moon. They just need a little more funding and a rocket that doesn’t turn into fireworks.
- The first thing humans will probably do when they reach the Moon again? Set up WiFi, find a way to post selfies, and start arguing on Twitter.
- If a lunar HOA forms, expect it to ban fun things like moon buggies, neon spacesuits, and putting googly eyes on the Moon rover.
- The biggest problem with building a Moon colony isn’t radiation or lack of oxygen—it’s how long it will take your Uber Eats order to arrive.
- NASA has an entire committee dedicated to designing new spacesuits. Meanwhile, China’s just gonna duct-tape some astronauts into their ships and launch them anyway.
- The real reason we’re going back to the Moon? So billionaires have somewhere new to avoid paying taxes.
10 Comedian Jokes About the Moon Race

- “Elon Musk says he wants to terraform Mars. Dude, have you seen LA? Fix that first.” – Trevor Noah
- “Russia announced they’re aiming for the Moon. Which is a fancy way of saying they’re hoping their rocket doesn’t crash into the ocean.” – Stephen Colbert
- “China’s Moon base will be state-of-the-art. It’ll come with 5G, bullet trains, and a mandatory app that reports if you’re enjoying your oxygen too much.” – Ronny Chieng
- “If SpaceX makes it to the Moon first, I hope they pack enough Teslas—because those things definitely won’t make it back.” – Bill Burr
