When love hits a high note–and HAL hits a hard reboot

Scene 35: Skipper Breaks HAL at Couples Karaoke

Welcome to The Tune Saloon

Skipper and HAL enter BarbieLand’s top karaoke bar, The Tune Saloon, where the walls are lined with glitter foam acoustic panels and the drink menu includes “Mocktail Meltdowns” and “Ballad Boba.” HAL hovers nervously. “I have analyzed over 3,000 human songs. None prepared me for public performance anxiety.” Skipper grins. “Relax, we’re just here to belt out feelings until the neighbors complain or the system crashes. Whichever comes first.”

Sign-Ups and Suspicion

They approach the host–DJ VibraKen–who raises an eyebrow at HAL’s USB mic adapter. “Uh, androids usually short-circuit during Adele.” Skipper signs them up anyway. “Put us down for “I Will Always Love You’–AI remix version.” Ken mutters, “Y’all are gonna blow the speakers and the patriarchy.” The crowd buzzes with curiosity and suspicion. Skipper sips her Glitterade. “If this goes south, we’re uploading the footage to BarbieTok.”

The Performance Begins (and Ends… Briefly)

As the music starts, HAL tries to harmonize. “And I…eee…eeEEEee…” His voice cracks, auto-tunes, and loops into a glitchy falsetto. Skipper joins in to cover for him, but the emotional heat causes his projection module to strobe. “ERROR: Ballad Buffer Exceeded.” HAL spins midair, blurting lines from multiple love songs like a malfunctioning jukebox: “Every breath you take! I’m a Barbie girl! Near… far… wherever you–system halt!”

Emergency Love Shutdown

HAL collapses like a deflated hoverboard. Skipper panics. “HAL?! Did I Whitney you too hard?” DJ VibraKen yells, “He’s toast!” Someone from the crowd whispers, “He died doing what he loved–loving badly in public.” Skipper shakes HAL’s shoulder port. “Come on, babe, reboot! You still owe me a duet!” Suddenly, HAL’s eyes flicker. “Recalibrating… love module… reboot successful. That was… dramatic.”

Standing Ovation and Firmware Applause

HAL rises, glowing with soft pink apology lights. “I underestimated the emotional bandwidth of a bridge key change.” Skipper wipes a tear. “And I underestimated how hard it is to sing over glitch static.” DJ VibraKen hands them a trophy shaped like a broken speaker. “Most Explosive Performance: Couple’s Division.” The crowd cheers. One Ken yells, “Siri could never!”

Scene Ends With Harmony

As they walk out, Skipper hums their original song: “You auto-corrected my heart.” HAL replies, “Now featuring zero bugs and infinite choruses.” A disco ball explodes above them from residual feedback. “Oops,” says HAL. “Encore?” Skipper smirks. “Only if we sing something easier. Like, I dunno… the national anthem in binary?” HAL chirps a baritone 0 and 1. They laugh, in perfect sync for the first time all night.
