Marjorie Taylor Greene Challenges Babylon Bee to Debate

ROME, GEORGIA — In a move political analysts are calling “equal parts gladiatorial and unmedicated,” Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has publicly challenged satirical news site The Babylon Bee to a live, televised debate “on truth, freedom, and whether Jesus was American.”

The challenge, issued via Instagram Live while Greene deadlifted a Gadsden flagpole and quoted the Book of Revelation, took the internet by storm. “They’ve mocked me one too many times,” she declared, panting heavily. “Let’s see if they can meme their way out of a debate with a patriot.”

The Babylon Bee’s editorial board initially assumed the challenge was part of their own April Fools’ archive. Editor-in-Chief Kyle Mann responded with: “We thought it was a bit from The Onion. Then we realized it was 100% sincere and 200% Georgia.”

Greene’s office followed up with a formal invitation printed on tactical camo cardstock and delivered via drone. The document included debate rules, a laminated “Satire Is Not a Safe Space” pamphlet, and a Chick-fil-A coupon book with the phrase “War Is a Spiritual Gift” scrawled in glitter pen.

Topics proposed for the debate include:

• “Is the Deep State in my toaster?”

• “Are satire writers responsible for vaccine hesitancy?”

• “Can Jesus own an AR-15 in Heaven?”

• “Why is mocking politicians suddenly considered funny?”

The Bee accepted the invitation on one condition: the debate must be moderated by a professional fact-checker in a medieval jester costume. Greene agreed, but insisted the jester also “have at least one confirmed exorcism on their résumé.”

Political commentators are calling it “the strangest showdown since Nixon debated a bowl of jelly beans on LSD.” Others worry the event may further confuse constituents already unsure whether The Babylon Bee is a real church.

“I support Marjorie’s mission to make satire accountable,” said a man in a red cowboy hat outside a Georgia Cracker Barrel. “But I did think the Bee was a Christian outreach farm.”

Meanwhile, Twitter users are treating the event like the Super Bowl of unhinged discourse. Bets are being placed on who will break character first, who will invoke Revelation 13, and whether the Bee’s staff will appear in beekeeper suits or just full body irony.

Satirical websites across the globe are watching with interest—and horror. The Onion issued a statement titled “Please Do Not Debate the Satirists. It Only Encourages Them.” The UK’s Private Eye simply mailed Greene a rubber chicken with the note: “Good luck.”

Greene has promised the debate will be “the most honest conversation America has had since the moon landing was faked.” The Bee has promised “merch.”

“Honestly, I’m rooting for the Bee,” said Jon Stewart. “They’ve taken punches from the entire Christian Right, Elon Musk, and the IRS. I think they can handle one CrossFit conspiracy theorist.”
