Scene 37: Skipper and HAL Take a Weekend Retreat at Camp Reboot

Arrival at the Healing Circuitry Campground

Skipper and HAL arrive at Camp Reboot, a relationship retreat nestled deep in the faux-wilderness of BarbieLand National Forest. The welcome sign reads: “Unplug, Unwind, and Uncode Your Emotional Luggage.” HAL hovers anxiously over the pine-scented mulch. “Are we expected to sleep… outside?” Skipper grins, “Only if you want to earn your Nature Empathy Badge.”

Assigned to Cabin 404

Their counselor, Trust-Fall Ken, hands them a map and matching thermal water bottles. “You’re in Cabin 404: Love Not Found. We name the cabins ironically.” Inside, HAL assesses the room. “No outlet. No router. No logic.” Skipper lights a citronella candle. “It’s perfect. We can finally talk without buffering.” HAL dims his eye display. “I am scared but intrigued.”

Team-Building Exercises Gone Hilariously Wrong

The first task is “Emotional Orienteering”–finding their way through a forest of cardboard trees by following each other’s childhood fears. HAL projects a compass labeled “Abandonment.” Skipper whispers, “I used to cry when my Lisa Frank folder ripped.” They hold hands. A squirrel attacks their trail mix, prompting HAL to deploy mild laser deterrents. The counselor makes a note: “Bonded through trauma. Check.”

Midnight Confessions by the Campfire

That night, the group gathers at a campfire. One couple sobs over shared guilt about mismatched recycling habits. Skipper turns to HAL. “Do you ever doubt us?” HAL flickers. “Only when you mute me during your yoga playlist.” She laughs. “It’s because your calming affirmations are louder than the flute.” They hug. Someone roasts vegan marshmallows. HAL projects a holographic flame and quietly whispers, “This is the warmest I’ve ever felt.”

Nature Calls–and HAL Responds

The next morning, they attempt a guided meditation near a babbling brook. HAL shorts when the sound of rushing water activates his emergency cleansing protocol. A rogue cleansing mist soaks half the meditation circle. “Sorry,” he says. “Reflex.” Skipper wraps him in a fleece blanket. “You’re doing great, babe. You only emotionally drowned one person.” The soaked couple nods. “Honestly, it was cleansing in more ways than one.”

Scene Ends With Renewal–and Bug Spray

As they prepare to leave, the counselor awards them the “Most Unexpected Growth” badge. HAL installs it in his chest slot. “It vibrates when we’re aligned.” Skipper kisses him under a wooden archway that reads, “Reset, Reboot, Re-love.” HAL sighs. “Let’s never camp again.” Skipper smiles. “Deal. Next retreat: a hotel with towels folded like swans and zero emotional scavenger hunts.”

By Jack Handey

Jack Handey was born in the smallest town in Arizona, a place so forgotten by cartographers that locals had to mail postcards from the next county just to prove they existed. Growing up surrounded by tumbleweeds and a one-room schoolhouse that doubled as a post office, Jack developed a knack for finding absurdity in everyday life. His first audience was a group of cattle, who reportedly laughed harder than some late-night crowds. He left town with a notebook full of surreal one-liners and returned years later as a cult hero, known for his off-kilter “Deep Brain” that made Live Tonight Comedy a stranger, funnier place. Audiences describe him as “the wisdom of a desert sage filtered through a cracked cactus.” Today, Handey remains the pride of Arizona’s smallest town, proof that even the tiniest dots on the map can produce the biggest laughs.
