Themed Funerals
“He Wanted Sparkle and Rhythm. He Got Fire Code Violations and Funkadelic Mourning.”
When Dennis Callahan passed away at 62, he left explicit instructions: no somber suits, no hymns, and absolutely no “funeral beige.” He wanted a disco-themed farewell–complete with mirrored urn, roller skates, and a playlist he titled *Stayin’ Alive, Ironically.*
Things started strong. Mourners entered to “Boogie Wonderland.” Pallbearers wore sequined jumpsuits. The priest wore platforms.
But then the glitter cannon misfired. Instead of a dignified burst during the eulogy, it exploded prematurely, covering the grieving widow in 13 pounds of reflective confetti and temporarily blinding the organist.
“It was like Studio 54 had beef with the afterlife,” said cousin Gloria.
The casket, mounted on a rotating disco platform, briefly short-circuited and spun at 90 RPM. Dennis’ urn had to be stabilized with zip ties and a churro stand.
Despite chaos, guests described the service as “emotional cardio.” One attendee said, “I laughed, I cried, I did the hustle. It’s what he would’ve wanted.”
The event has inspired a new trend: genre funerals. Dennis’ widow is planning a western-themed cremation for herself called *Ashes & Spurs.*
