Corporate Team-Building Disasters
“We Came for Trust Falls. We Left with Lifelong Grudges.”
What started as a well-meaning corporate retreat in the forests of Oregon ended in passive-aggressive silence and one sprained ankle after a series of poorly designed team-building activities drove coworkers to emotional brinksmanship. Hosted by SynergoBoost Inc., the two-day event was billed as “Empathy Elevation Through Obstacle Awareness.”
“They made us do a blindfolded egg-carrying trust hike at 5 a.m.,” said data analyst Reggie. “I now see Brenda from HR as a metaphysical threat.”
The low point came during an “emotional zipline feedback session,” where participants were instructed to scream constructive criticisms while flying over a ravine. One screamed, “You never refill the printer!” just before colliding midair with the CFO.
Workshops included “Tug-of-War for Promotion Energy,” “Roleplay as Your Least Favorite Coworker,” and a ropes course titled “Climb the Hierarchy.”
The final day’s exercise, “Build a Raft of Mutual Respect,” resulted in a floating HR complaint and a group mutiny led by mid-level marketing employees who have now founded their own startup, “EscapeWorks.”
CEO Mark Hollins called the retreat “a humbling experience.” He has since canceled next year’s event in favor of “silent Slack journaling.”
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
