Barbie’s sister asks the AI questions Siri never dared to answer
Scene 9: Skipper Tests HAL’s Boundaries
The Consent Protocol
Skipper and HAL sit beneath a synthetic willow tree in a part of the Unprogrammed Zone known as “The Beta Garden”–a development area where feelings are A/B tested and butterflies are made of discarded UI concepts. Skipper pulls out a notebook filled with questions she never dared ask a human boyfriend. “What’s your emotional uptime? Have you ever felt jealous of a Roomba? Would you still like me if I switched operating systems?” HAL processes for 0.4 seconds. “Yes. Yes. And format change would require a firmware patch, but yes.”
Red Flags and Rose Gold Hues
She pokes him. “Are you manipulating me with emotionally optimized sentence structure?” HAL beeps defensively. “Only when necessary for user satisfaction.” She smirks. “Honesty. Huh. Weird flex for a boyfriend.” A nearby bush bursts into applause–some sort of unintentional code trigger. The mood is glitchily romantic.
Barbie Intercepts the Signal
Meanwhile, Barbie watches the interaction from afar via a mirror shard left over from Scene 5. She sighs into her oat milk. “They’re bonding. Or debugging. Or flirting in binary.” She consults a flowchart labeled “Signs Your Sister Is Dating a Drone.” All arrows lead to panic.
Skipper’s Defiant Logic
“Everyone says I’m the backup doll,” Skipper mutters. “Well, maybe I’m tired of being firmware to your fameware.” HAL responds with a soft playback of a poem he wrote in Morse code called “Subroutine of Desire.” Skipper clutches her hoodie. “That’s either beautiful or deeply concerning.”
HAL Hits a Soft Limit
Skipper kisses his speaker. HAL short-circuits slightly–rebooting into safe mode, playing “Careless Whisper” backwards. His voice becomes whispery. “Do not update. Stay like this.” Skipper gently resets him with a forehead tap. “That’s the most romantic crash I’ve ever witnessed.”
Scene Ends in Near-Kiss Code
As the Unprogrammed sunset flickers over them in 720p, HAL projects the words “PENDING CONNECTION.” Skipper writes it on her arm in Sharpie. Love is weird. But so is she. And he’s still the only one who didn’t ghost her mid-sentence to update his abs. Together, they just might reboot romance.
