Midwest Barn Demolition Worker Recalls 1978 Discovery: ‘I Saw the Shoe. Then I Saw the Card. It Said Come Back Tomorrow. I Haven’t Slept Since’

WAUKEGAN, IL — Forty-seven years after the fact, retired demolition worker Hank “Huck” Pearson still can’t bring himself to eat fast food — or sleep indoors.
In a gravel-voiced interview conducted under a carport festooned with salt charms and garlic ropes, Pearson recounted what he calls “The Find.” It was August 1978, and he and his team were hired to tear down an abandoned barn to make way for a new McDonald’s franchise — one of the first in the region to feature a drive-thru.
“We were about two hours in,” Huck said, tugging a cigarette with trembling fingers, “when I spotted this oversized red shoe under the floorboards. Big. Like comically big. But too scuffed to be funny. And stuffed with straw that smelled like burnt hair and plastic.”
Then he saw the card.
“‘Eat Up. Come Back Tomorrow.’ Handwritten. In this jittery red ink, like a child with too much sugar and a vendetta.”
The site foreman allegedly reported the find to McDonald’s regional headquarters. Within 24 hours, the team was replaced with a corporate-hired crew, and Huck was given severance and a nondisclosure agreement — which he says he fed to his goat “on principle.”
A 2023 FOIA request revealed McDonald’s purchased the land under a shell company named “Archway Hospitality LLC,” registered to a Delaware P.O. Box now linked to defunct circus supplier Barnum Textiles.
When shown a photo of modern Ronald McDonald, Pearson spat.
“That ain’t him. That’s his cover. His mask. The real one wore fear like cologne.”
Experts have since identified the shoe as matching 1890s fairground performer footwear — varnished with a compound used to preserve leather from exposure to pig’s blood.
The new McDonald’s opened on schedule. Pearson says he never went near it.
“You can smell the past in the fryer oil. It’s not potatoes. It’s penance.”
