Autocorrect fails
“Let’s grab cake” becomes “Let’s grab knives”–Terror Ensues
In what digital analysts are calling “a minor typo with major consequences,” a group birthday text meant to coordinate a surprise party for Grandma Edna instead triggered a brief counterterrorism alert when autocorrect changed “Let’s grab cake” to “Let’s grab knives.”
“We just wanted to meet at Applebee’s,” said daughter-in-law Pam, now on a no-fly list. “Next thing I know, there are drones circling my backyard and Grandma’s in a panic bunker.”
The FBI responded to the message within 18 minutes. “We take all threats seriously,” said Agent Kyle Freeman. “Even the ones with glitter emojis.”
Grandma Edna, 91, initially mistook the message for a knife-themed murder mystery party and showed up in a trench coat with brass knuckles and cupcakes. “I’m old but I ain’t soft,” she declared, wielding a butter knife like a pirate.
Apple’s spokesperson issued a statement saying, “Autocorrect is powered by learning models. And sometimes those models assume everyone is a passive-aggressive mobster.”
The party was ultimately postponed, though Pam did receive a formal apology and a free Applebee’s dessert shooter labeled “FBI Special.”
Cybersecurity experts advise families to use safer terms like “pastry acquisition” or “sugar summit” when texting group events. Or, ideally, just call people like it’s 1998.
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
