Meme Misinterpretations
“I Thought It Said ‘Blame Canada.’ I Didn’t Know It Was Satirical.”
Seventy-eight-year-old Gladys Trumbull posted a meme she thought was a joke about maple syrup and cold weather. Instead, it was a meme from a conspiracy subreddit suggesting Canada was behind global supply chain disruptions. Within hours, Gladys had unknowingly incited an international incident and gained 40,000 Finnish followers.
“I just thought the moose was cute,” Gladys said. “I didn’t know I was launching a geopolitical movement.”
The meme–featuring a Photoshopped beaver in night-vision goggles–was captioned, “The Canadians are in the wires again.” Gladys shared it with the comment: “LOL so true!”
Within 24 hours, #OperationSnowFence was trending. Canadian officials issued a statement. Finland offered Gladys honorary citizenship and a hat with antlers.
Gladys has since leaned into her new persona. Her Etsy shop sells merch reading “Maple Leaf Menace” and “Global Threat Since Bingo Night.”
She’s now the face of a minor political party in Finland called *Moose Over Money*, advocating for sensible sweaters and anti-poutine tariffs.
Her grandchildren have revoked her Wi-Fi but admit, “She looks badass in that sash.”
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
