Netflix Sends Hummus-Filled Drone Gift Boxes to Critics Who Liked Hogan’s Hostages, Threateningly Empty Ones to Those Who Didn’t

In the glitzy world of Hollywood publicity stunts, it’s hard to shock an industry desensitized to goat-led flash mobs and AI-generated influencer weddings. But Netflix has somehow outdone itself again—this time with drone-delivered hummus diplomacy.
As part of its award season push for the controversial hit Hogan’s Hostages, Netflix has begun sending hand-carved cedar boxes filled with artisanal hummus, pomegranate crackers, and encrypted QR codes to entertainment journalists who gave the show glowing reviews.
To those who panned it? Identical boxes, equally ornate, but completely empty. And heavier. Somehow.
Praise Comes With Chickpea Rewards
Variety’s Jude Vasquez posted a TikTok unboxing of his gift, revealing a velvety spread labeled “Sabotage Sabra” and a note: “You get it. Thank you for seeing through the satire.”
In contrast, IndieWire’s top TV critic, who called the show “geopolitical gaslighting in a tunnel,” received the same box, but opened it to find nothing but a small note reading “We see YOU too.”
Drone Diplomacy Goes Rogue
The drones used for delivery were custom-painted to resemble miniature UN surveillance aircraft. One reportedly hovered over a West Hollywood coffee shop for 14 minutes, refusing to deliver until the recipient watched the pilot episode again.
A representative from Netflix’s FYC unit declined to comment on operational drone ethics, but posted a meme of Bibi the goat wearing aviators and the caption: “Some of you get snacks. Some of you get surveillance.”
Critics React
- The LA Times TV desk called it “deeply unsettling… and also delicious.”
- BuzzFeed listed the drones as one of their “Top 10 Pettiest Emmy Campaign Moves Ever.”
- The New Yorker wrote a poem about it. We didn’t read it.
One drone reportedly crashed into a blogger’s bird bath after receiving a three-star review. The blogger later upgraded the review to four stars and received a second delivery—this time with olive tapenade and a note that said “We forgive, but we never forget.”
A Legal Gray Area, But With Tahini
Legal experts disagree on whether hummus-based incentives constitute a bribe under California election law or just an “intense Middle Eastern grazing platter.”
“They didn’t pay us,” said one reviewer. “They just… nourished us into submission.”
Bibi’s Involvement Suspected
Though not confirmed, it’s believed Bibi the goat personally headbutted the final delivery approval button for each drone.
One paparazzi photo shows her standing on a crate labeled “FLY OR DIE: FYC EDITION.”
Hogan’s Hostages is now streaming. All drones have been recalled for reprogramming, except one that joined SAG and is seeking rep.
