Man Detained for Streaming 1990s Sitcom Without Party Commentary
A man in the Guangdong province has been detained after authorities caught him illegally streaming the sitcom Friends without the mandatory Party-approved commentary overlay, a violation of China’s new “Contextual Harmony Viewing Act.”
The man, 34-year-old Zhao Wen, was arrested after neighbors overheard Joey Tribbiani say, “How you doin’?” — without a 15-second disclaimer explaining capitalist mating rituals in pre-crisis New York.
“The sitcom portrayed a dangerously free lifestyle,” said Public Morality Czar Li Jing. “Unregulated dating, laughter without bureaucratic supervision, and an alarming amount of caffeine consumption.”
In accordance with the new Cultural Safety Law, all Western media must be “supplemented with Marxist contextual frames.” This includes subtitles such as:
-
“Monica’s apartment is unaffordable due to late-stage capitalism.”
-
“Rachel’s decision to leave the coffeehouse is a betrayal of collectivist work values.”
-
“Phoebe’s independent spirit is destabilizing to public unity.”
Zhao reportedly watched eight episodes before being reported by a Huawei Smart Microwave, which overheard dialogue that could “cause citizens to ask questions about American sarcasm.”
During questioning, Zhao insisted the show was “just background noise” while folding laundry. Officials responded by assigning him a month in the “Ideological Realignment Theater,” where he will watch Party-commentated reruns of Friends, Seinfeld, and The Office, featuring voiceovers by a stern, humorless man named Uncle Truth.
The official Party Commentary version of Friends is now rebranded as “Colleagues with Approved Housing Permits.” Chandler’s sarcasm has been replaced with statistics about regional GDP growth, and laugh tracks replaced with subtle reminders to respect elder cadres.
Zhao faces six months of meme rehab or, if he behaves, a chance to act in the state remake: “Reunification Café.”
