Confused Amateur Magicians
“He Pulled an Ace from Behind Grandma’s Ear–Then Pulled the Sprinklers.”
An ill-timed card trick performed at the solemn farewell for local librarian Edna Marple ended in chaos when hobbyist magician Derek “The Dazzler” Dixon attempted to spice up the eulogy with what he called “respectful illusions.” His sleight-of-hand backfired, triggering a chain reaction involving a dropped lighter, a tablecloth, and a surprisingly flammable floral arrangement.
“He said, ‘Now watch closely as I vanish grief!'” said cousin Tina. “Next thing we knew, Aunt Carol’s wig was smoking.”
Derek had not been invited to perform. He was dating Edna’s great-niece and reportedly brought his magician’s kit “just in case the mood felt right.”
Funeral-goers initially tolerated his presence, even chuckling when he pulled a rabbit-shaped eraser from his pocket. But when he attempted a flaming playing card reveal over the casket, things escalated. A spark caught the funeral pamphlets. Someone screamed. A dove escaped.
The fire was quickly contained by a surprisingly nimble pallbearer with a bottle of Evian and karate training. No one was hurt, though the casket now has what the family refers to as “a mystical scorch mark of memory.”
Derek has since been banned from three funeral homes and one dog show (unrelated incident).
He remains unrepentant. “Magic isn’t always convenient,” he said. “Sometimes the trick is simply surviving the spectacle.”
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
