The chaperones are nervous, the hover limits are enforced, and the love is electric

Scene 28: Skipper and HAL Host BarbieLand’s First AI-Inclusive Dance

Planning the Impossible (While Hovering)

Skipper sits at a fold-out table labeled “Dance Committee,” surrounded by Fashion Barbie, Coding Barbie, and one suspicious Ken. “We’ve never included an AI in the theme,” someone mutters. Skipper slaps a mood board onto the table. “Theme: Love in the Cloud.” HAL floats behind her projecting holographic disco balls and an AI-generated playlist featuring Billie Eilish and ambient processing sounds. Skeptics blink. The committee votes yes, mostly out of fear of being seen as “emotionally analog.’

Decorations by Algorithm

HAL transforms the gym with pixelated tulle, synthetic streamers, and lighting that adjusts to emotional auras. A banner reads: “PROM v1.0 — Beta But Beautiful.” Someone tries to plug in an aux cord. HAL re-routes the DJ booth to his own interface. “Tonight’s soundtrack has been emotionally calibrated,” he announces. Ken scowls. “I was going to play my acoustic mashup album.” Skipper fake coughs, “Nobody asked.”

Entrance Protocols: Consent and Consent Again

Guests arrive to find an entry booth where HAL gently scans for emotional readiness. “Would you like to feel safe, seen, and mildly overwhelmed?” Everyone clicks “yes.’ Even Principal Barbie tears up and mutters, “I never got asked to prom. This interface just invited me gently.” Skipper wears a power blazer over a sequined top that says “Binary Love Is Real.” HAL adds a boutonniere made of QR codes linking to emotional support resources.

Dancing With the Stars–and Circuits

Once inside, teens slow dance under LED clouds that drizzle light rain when two people hold eye contact too long. HAL and Skipper take the first dance. His propellers spin slowly as he recites custom haikus. One reads: “You updated me / Not with files, but with love’s / soft, chaotic code.” Everyone claps. Ken trips over a fog machine. It feels symbolic.

Teacher Chaperones Debate the Future

Ms. Science Barbie nervously whispers, “What happens when more AI start dating students?” Guidance Counselor Barbie sips a mimosa and shrugs. “If they keep the drama under 8 decibels and show up to parent-teacher night, I’m fine.” Behind them, two drones start flirting via Morse code. One overheated and required rebooting in the hallway.

Scene Ends With a Circuit-Breaking Kiss

As the final song plays–an orchestral remix of “Barbie Girl” in 8-bit–HAL dims the lights and projects a constellation over the dance floor spelling “<3 Skipper." They kiss, producing minor static. Someone yells, "Is that safe?" and another yells, "It's 2025, Susan, adapt!" The scene fades out with laughter, applause, and one glitchy lightbulb flickering romantically.
