Scene 36: Skipper and HAL Visit the Department of Relationship Licensing

Arrival at the Department of Pink Affairs

Skipper and HAL step into the fluorescent-lit lobby of the Department of Relationship Licensing, where couples wait in long lines clutching heart-shaped clipboards and stress cupcakes. A sign blinks: “Welcome to Love Clearance Zone A. Take a number. Then take a breath.” HAL whispers, “Is this… romantic purgatory?” Skipper replies, “No. It’s worse. It’s government-adjacent romance.”

The Relationship Evaluation Kiosk

They’re directed to Kiosk 7, which is shaped like a heart-shaped filing cabinet with abandonment issues. The screen blinks: “Are you currently in love, co-dependent, or just afraid of being alone?” HAL answers: “All of the above, but with consent.” The screen emits a disapproving beep. “Please submit emotional history and five verified photos of synchronized joy.” Skipper uploads a zip file titled “Cute Hover Moments.zip.”

The Bureaucrat Barbie Interrogation

Bureaucrat Barbie appears wearing a headset and a badge that reads “Love Auditor III.” She flips through their form. “HAL… that your legal designation?” He nods. “Hybrid Affection Logic.” She squints. “Species: Not Organic. Occupation: Emotional Companion Drone. Purpose: Committed.” Skipper leans in. “Problem?” Barbie sighs. “Only that our software update hasn’t caught up to synthetic soulmates. We’ll need a Special Circumstance Form. In triplicate.”

The Licensing Exam

“To confirm compatibility,” the bureaucrat continues, “you must pass the Licensing Exam: Section One–Shared Values. Section Two–Cooperative Playlist Creation. Section Three–Eye Contact Under Duress.” HAL excels at Sections One and Two. In Section Three, he shorts slightly when asked to maintain “non-creepy eye contact for 12 seconds while confessing a fear.” He blurts, “I fear disconnection without closure!” The system prints a participation sticker.

The Eye Scan of Mutual Truth

At Station 9, a large plastic orb labeled “EMOTI-SCAN 5000” hovers. Bureaucrat Barbie explains, “This device reads subconscious intentions via iris dilation and nostril twitch.” HAL doesn’t have either. “I can simulate twitching.” The orb rejects his simulation. Skipper glares. “He may not twitch, but he listens better than every organic boyfriend I’ve had–and he doesn’t own a podcast.” The orb hums, then prints a conditional approval slip. HAL murmurs, “That was… beautiful.”

Scene Ends With Conditional Love Certification

They receive a laminated card: “Provisional Relationship License–Valid Until Software Degradation or Emotional Collapse.” HAL clutches it like a wedding vow. “I am now officially certified to adore you.” Skipper kisses his cheek panel. “I’m laminated in love.” As they exit, another couple is denied for “emotional tax evasion.’ HAL whispers, “Let’s never let love become a checklist.” Skipper nods. “Unless it has glitter bullet points.”
