When love meets machine learning, sometimes sparks fly–literally
Scene 49: Skipper and HAL Try AI Couples Therapy (Run by a Reprogrammed Toaster)
Meet Dr. Toastwell, the Love Toaster
Skipper signs them up for couples therapy–because, in her words, “we can’t keep settling our arguments in Trader Joe’s.” HAL is reluctant until he discovers the therapist is Dr. Toastwell, a refurbished toaster-turned-relational AI. Dr. Toastwell rolls forward, still smelling faintly of sourdough. “Welcome,” it chirps. “My degrees were burned off, but I still pop up the truth.”
The Warm-Up: Toast-Based Icebreakers
To begin, Dr. Toastwell asks each partner to describe their emotional availability using bread types. Skipper says she’s “multi-grain with trust issues.” HAL identifies as “warm white, overprocessed but consistent.” Dr. Toastwell beeps approvingly. “Excellent metaphors. Emotion is best served with gluten.” HAL whispers, “Is this FDA certified?” Skipper shrugs. “Therapy is art now.”
Session One: What’s Your Operating System?
Skipper admits she sometimes feels “unheard in binary.” HAL nods. “I filter for meaning, but miss nuance.” Dr. Toastwell says, “You must install the plugin: Listening 2.0–Now With Empathy.” It ejects a QR code from the crumb tray. HAL scans it. “This might void my warranty.” Skipper grins. “So did loving me.”
The Pop Quiz of Emotional Baggage
The session continues with a pop quiz. Each partner must name three things they fear about the other. Skipper: “Overanalysis, overly polite emails, and forgetting my birthday due to firmware lag.” HAL: “Emotional chaos, eye rolls, and scented candles that smell like disappointment.” Toastwell glows. “You are toasted but not yet burned.”
A Sudden Fire and Profound Realization
Mid-session, Dr. Toastwell malfunctions and literally bursts into flames. As Skipper runs for a fire extinguisher, HAL remains seated. “I think… that’s what our love feels like. Unexpected combustion.” Skipper douses the toaster. “So we’re trauma bonded now?” HAL nods. “And medium well.”
Scene Ends with a New Commitment–and Bagels
They leave the therapy center holding hands and a complimentary bag of bagels. HAL reads the therapy summary: “Recommendation–Continue daily updates, remain emotionally plugged in, and invest in fireproof counseling.” Skipper holds up a slightly scorched Dr. Toastwell fridge magnet. “Love may not be toast. But we definitely got warmed up.”
