Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency: Cutting Waste While Ironically Being the Biggest Waste

Billionaire CEO to Slash Government Spending Because What Could Possibly Go Wrong With a Literal Manchild in Charge?

When the Guy Who Loses Money on Every New Product Gets Control of the Budget

Elon Musk, the man famous for starting companies and then nearly destroying them through management decisions that would make a freshman MBA student say ‘Maybe slow down,’ has been given control over something called the Department of Government Efficiency. Because apparently America decided that what government needs isn’t stability or institutional knowledge, but rather the energy of a billionaire who got where he is by hiring brilliant engineers and then ignoring their advice.

The premise is genuinely insane. Musk, a guy whose personal wealth comes from government subsidies (Tesla, SpaceX), is being appointed to cut government spending. It’s like hiring an arsonist to manage a fire department because he says he’s really good at starting fires. Technically he’s right, but his motives aren’t aligned with what you’re actually trying to accomplish.

The Efficiency Expert Who Made His Fortune on Inefficiency

Elon Musk reviews government spending reports, identifying areas for potential budget reductions in his new efficiency role.

Let’s be clear about Elon’s actual track record: he founded X.com, which merged with another company, turned into Paypal (which he didn’t stick around for), took over Tesla when it was nearly bankrupt, turned it profitable, then tried to destroy it every six months with his impulsive decisions. He started SpaceX which actually works, then spent years trying to make it worse with increasingly stupid design decisions. He bought Twitter for $44 billion and spent two years proving he didn’t understand how the platform worked.

Bill Burr said something about how success doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing, and that perfectly describes Elon. He’s incredibly successful despite his management philosophy, not because of it. Putting him in charge of government efficiency is like hiring someone who burned down every house they renovated to manage a major construction company. Sure, they’re prolific, but the results are disaster.

The real efficiency measure isn’t how much money gets cut. It’s whether the government still functions afterward. Musk will probably propose cutting departments entirely because he doesn’t understand that removing funding doesn’t remove the problems those departments were designed to solve. It just means the problems don’t get solved in organized ways anymore—they just explode chaotically instead.

The Billionaire Ideology Problem

Elon Musk presents his government efficiency proposals to Congress, outlining plans for dramatic budget cuts and operational reforms.

Musk will probably advocate for cutting programs that benefit poor people because he looks at the poor and thinks ‘they could just make better decisions.’ This is the perspective of someone who inherited wealth, built companies that rely on subsidies, and then credits his success to personal brilliance rather than systemic luck. Efficiency to him means ‘cut anything that doesn’t benefit billionaires directly.’

Jerry Seinfeld said something about observing reality, and the reality is this: Musk views government the way he views Twitter–as something broken that needs to be destroyed and rebuilt to his specifications. That perspective works fine if you’re willing to sacrifice everyone but yourself. For a government, it’s catastrophic.

Amy Schumer talks about how money doesn’t solve problems if you don’t understand the problems, and that’s Musk in every situation ever. He throws money at challenges without understanding them, gets lucky occasionally, and then credits his genius. He’ll do the same with government efficiency. He’ll cut things that seem wasteful to him, destroy critical infrastructure, and then act confused when the consequences are severe.

Watching the Disaster Unfold

The ‘efficiency’ Musk will bring will look like Twitter management: arbitrary, destructive, and ultimately self-serving. He’ll fire experienced government employees, then act shocked when institutional knowledge walks out the door. He’ll propose cutting budgets for things he doesn’t personally value, then blame government inefficiency when those things stop working.

Ron White said something about how you can’t fix stupid, and you definitely can’t fix stupid when stupid is a billionaire with power. Musk will make cuts that look good on paper but destroy actual function. He’ll streamline departments until they collapse. And he’ll probably tweet about how much money he saved while government actually falls apart.

The most efficient thing Musk could do is recuse himself. But efficiency requires self-awareness, and Elon Musk defining his own track record with self-awareness is like asking a hurricane to monitor its own damage. What we’re about to watch isn’t efficient government. What we’re about to watch is efficient destruction of government, and Musk will probably brag about it on X while everyone else suffers the consequences.

Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.

Jack Handey was born in the smallest town in Arizona, a place so forgotten by cartographers that locals had to mail postcards from the next county just to prove they existed. Growing up surrounded by tumbleweeds and a one-room schoolhouse that doubled as a post office, Jack developed a knack for finding absurdity in everyday life. His first audience was a group of cattle, who reportedly laughed harder than some late-night crowds. He left town with a notebook full of surreal one-liners and returned years later as a cult hero, known for his off-kilter “Deep Brain” that made Live Tonight Comedy a stranger, funnier place. Audiences describe him as “the wisdom of a desert sage filtered through a cracked cactus.” Today, Handey remains the pride of Arizona’s smallest town, proof that even the tiniest dots on the map can produce the biggest laughs.
