Social Media Detox Fakers
“She Said She Was Unplugging. She Meant from Her Main Account Only.”
Wellness influencer Luna Skye publicly declared a digital detox last month with a dramatic Instagram goodbye post, complete with teary-eyed selfies, a Pablo Neruda quote, and the caption “Logging Off to Log Inward.” But sharp-eyed followers quickly noticed that Luna’s engagement hadn’t dipped at all–in fact, it spiked. Turns out, Luna never really left. She just multiplied.
“She told us she was off-grid,” said fan-turned-skeptic @NamasteNancy. “Then @MoonbeamSkye83 started liking all the same dog memes and arguing with trolls who insulted Luna’s ‘authenticity.'”
Investigators found at least 12 burner accounts tied to Luna’s IP address, each with names like @CrystalWanderer, @EarthMamaBackup, and @SkyePatrolOfficial. They posted quotes, liked all of Luna’s past content, and occasionally replied to themselves with encouragement like “U r glowing even in silence, queen.”
Reached for comment, Luna replied via a Canva slideshow: “I never said WHO was detoxing. Maybe it was my shadow self.”
Psychologists now warn of “parasocial fasting fraud,” where influencers stage breaks to harvest authenticity points while still digitally lurking in disguise.
Luna has since returned to her main account with a soft-focus reel titled *Why My Soul Needed This Break (And Yours Does Too).*
She’s also launched a course: *Digital Rebirth Through Burner Strategy.*
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
