“It Was Supposed to Be on Vibrate. Now I’m Booking Weddings.”
When paralegal Devin Knox forgot to silence his phone before a high-stakes courtroom hearing, he didn’t expect his custom ringtone–a techno remix of “Barbie Girl” featuring dolphin noises and DJ airhorns–to launch him into unwanted internet fame and a part-time career as a novelty wedding DJ.
“I panicked and couldn’t find the phone in my backpack,” Devin said. “It played for 47 seconds. Long enough for the judge to ask who was dropping the beat.”
Footage of the incident went viral after a juror discreetly filmed the moment and uploaded it with the caption “Justice… but make it Barbiecore.”
The ringtone, originally made as a joke for his fantasy football group chat, now has over 2 million streams. Devin was offered a record deal by a label specializing in ironic ringtone revivalism.
Despite being reprimanded by the court and temporarily banned from entering courtrooms with electronic devices, Devin has leaned in–launching *GavelBeats*, a remix series combining legal jargon and early 2000s pop.
He’s currently in talks to open for a DJ set at LawProm, an annual dance for legal interns.
