Adult Spelling Bee
“I Thought They Said ‘Name a Beer.’ I Yelled ‘Budweiser.’ Next Thing I Know, I’m Spelling ‘Chiaroscurist.'”
Local insurance adjuster Tony Delgado showed up to Lucky Lamp Tavern for trivia night, only to learn the event was an Adult Spelling Bee. Undeterred–and three pints in–he leaned into the mic and began sounding out letters like he was defusing a verbal bomb.
“The first word was ‘restaurant,’ which I usually spell with autocorrect,” Tony said. “By round four, I was summoning middle school demons and channeling my fifth-grade nemesis, Janine.”
The crowd was stunned when Tony correctly spelled “chiaroscurist,” “syzygy,” and “schadenfreude” with the confidence of a sleep-deprived dictionary.
“I don’t even know what they mean,” he said. “But my mouth just said them. It was like a divine drunk spelling bee spirit took over.”
He won a $25 bar tab, a novelty tiara, and the lingering fear that he peaked too soon.
Now known locally as “Spell Daddy,” Tony hosts grammar-themed karaoke nights and is writing a memoir titled *Drunk and Lettered.*
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
