Political DNA Tests: Swipe Left If You Even Flinched at the Word “Moderate”

Love Is Dead, but Voter Records Are Alive and Well

Once upon a time, you could date someone without knowing who they voted for—maybe you even thought it was charming that they didn’t. Today, that would be grounds for public flogging and a three-part Instagram story breakdown about “energetic dissonance.”

Christina Lane wasn’t exaggerating when she said that women aren’t a fit for men on either side of the political spectrum. Dating in America now comes with pre-screening protocols stricter than TSA: What are your views on Medicare? On Palestine? On whether Taylor Swift is a CIA op?

You’re not dating a person anymore. You’re trying to see if their entire worldview lines up with yours to the decimal point. You must be aligned on reproductive rights, tax brackets, intersectional trauma theory, and whether or not you think NPR is too centrist.

A woman in Los Angeles unmatched a man because he said he “wasn’t that into politics.” She called him “dangerously neutral.” Her therapist agreed.

You Don’t Need Compatibility—You Need Compliance

Modern romance doesn’t leave room for nuance. You’re either in the tribe or you’re the enemy. One wrong opinion, one ambiguous meme, and you’re flagged. It’s not enough to be liberal—you have to be the right kind of liberal, and God help you if you ever tweeted something centrist in 2016.

One guy said he lost three matches in a day after admitting he didn’t know who Marianne Williamson was. Another was ghosted after asking if it was okay not to have a strong opinion on Kamala Harris. “It was a test,” his date told us later. “And he failed. Badly.”

On the right, things aren’t any better. A woman described being grilled by her date on her Second Amendment stance before they even got to appetizers. “He asked me if I believed in freedom. I said yes. He asked me to prove it by liking a photo of him holding a gun next to a golden retriever named ‘Reagan.’”

Everyone’s wearing their politics on their sleeve because it’s easier than explaining themselves. “Liberal, feminist, anti-capitalist, non-monogamous, eco-somatic,” one woman wrote on her profile. What does it mean? Doesn’t matter. It works like a QR code for dating approval.

Political Purity Tests Have Replaced Emotional Intelligence

In a society too terrified to feel, politics have become the only safe emotion. We no longer ask, “Do you know how to love?” We ask, “Do you repost the right infographics?” Political compatibility is now shorthand for moral character—even though most people don’t know what they actually believe. They just know who they don’t want to be seen with.

A man told us his date walked out when he said he voted for Bernie but “wasn’t sure about reparations.” She left $6 on the table and said, “This isn’t safe.” He later cried into a tote bag that read “Defund the Algorithm.”

What Lane is highlighting is this: politics has become a filtering tool, not a point of discussion. It’s no longer about belief. It’s about branding. And once again, branding has killed curiosity. We don’t date to discover—we date to verify.

And in the end, you’re not being ghosted because you’re wrong. You’re being ghosted because you’re not certified.
