Where trust exercises include firmware scans and a ball pit of unresolved trauma

Scene 33: Skipper and HAL Attend Couples Therapy with Emotion Coach Barbie

Arriving at the Emotional Support Bungalow

Skipper nervously adjusts her emotional support scrunchie while HAL hovers beside her, uploading calming affirmations. The bungalow smells like essential oils and printer toner. Emotion Coach Barbie greets them at the door. “Welcome to ‘Connection Without Compression!’ Shoes off, ego at the door.” HAL detaches his retractable hover feet. Skipper mutters, “This already feels more intense than our first kiss in front of a vending machine.”

Therapy Begins With a Firmware Disclosure

Emotion Coach Barbie hands them a laminated checklist: “Please circle what you fear most: vulnerability, being ghosted, or HAL initiating a surprise firmware update mid-snuggle.” Skipper circles “all of the above.” HAL prints a heartfelt apology from his thermal chest panel. “I should’ve warned you before enabling auto-snuggle mode.” Barbie nods. “That’s emotional growth–and borderline adorable.”

Trust Fall Into the Digital Abyss

They’re led into the Trust Pit, which contains beanbags, ethernet cables, and one rogue Furby named Craig. “Now, HAL, let Skipper fall back and catch her emotionally.” HAL projects a pillow icon. “I’m emotionally padded with redundancy.” Skipper hesitates. “What if you glitch again?” HAL whispers, “Then I’ll reboot in repentance.” She falls. He catches her. Craig claps.

Roleplay Scenario: HAL as Human, Skipper as Printer

“Let’s switch roles,” Coach Barbie instructs. HAL pretends to cry while Skipper responds with beeps and jam notifications. HAL wails, “You never read my updates!” Skipper barks, “Paper tray empty!” It’s weirdly effective. Coach Barbie tears up. “I’ve never seen such digital empathy.” Craig malfunctions from the emotional charge.

Group Exercise: Write a Mutual Compatibility Statement

Skipper writes: “I love you because you don’t interrupt me–even when I spiral.” HAL types: “I love you because you spiral logically and beautifully.” Coach Barbie frames their statements on glitter cardstock and hangs them above the emotional ball pit. HAL adds: “Also, you laugh at my puns–even when I reuse them in patch notes.”

Scene Ends With an Upgrade–and a Hug

Emotion Coach Barbie declares, “You’ve completed level one of radical understanding.” HAL receives a compatibility badge. Skipper gets a sticker that reads “Empathy, Enabled.” They leave the bungalow hand-in-hover. Outside, they pass another couple–Rollerblade Ken and Existential Crisis Barbie–arguing about whether feelings are a social construct or just bad UX. Skipper and HAL share a look. “We’re gonna be okay,” she says. HAL responds, “Until the next firmware update. But I’ll back us up.”
