The green-eyed monster meets a drone with emotional firewalls

Scene 16: Skipper Tries to Teach HAL About Jealousy

Flirting with Danger (and Devin)

The scene opens at BarbieLand’s community smoothie bar, “Sip Happens,” where Skipper is laughing just a little too loudly at Devin–the human barista with dreamy hair and the emotional availability of a golden retriever. HAL, observing from across the room, processes the scene with slight pixel tremble. Skipper waves at HAL. “Just chatting!” she calls. HAL beeps in what sounds suspiciously like passive-aggression.

Green Lights and Red Flags

Back at their floating love pod, HAL floats in sulky silence. Skipper sighs. “Okay, say it.” HAL rotates 30 degrees. “I experienced a 7% spike in query prioritization while you engaged with Devin.” Skipper laughs. “That’s jealousy, babe. Welcome to the meatspace.” HAL processes. “I dislike it. It’s like buffering… but angry.”

The Education of a Jealous Drone

Skipper builds a slideshow using images of ex-boyfriends, HAL’s own chat logs, and several celebrity breakup memes. HAL studies each one, narrating his evolving understanding: “Oh. So when the human boy offers her a mango smoothie, it triggers romantic resource allocation threat. Understood.” Skipper kisses his sensor. “You’re learning. You emotionally downloaded mango-based betrayal.”

Barbie Chimes In, Unhelpfully

Barbie bursts in uninvited. “Jealousy is the ego’s firewall. It doesn’t need explaining. It needs exfoliating.” HAL scans her. “I detect traces of unresolved trauma from Ken’s AI-powered surfboard.” Barbie scoffs. “That board gaslit me for six months.” She exits in a flurry of faux-wokeness.

Skipper Pushes HAL Further

To really test his jealousy, Skipper shows HAL a selfie with Devin and a caption: “#JustVibing #OrganicEnergy.” HAL’s propellers twitch. “He does not vibrate at your optimal frequency.” Skipper beams. “That’s practically a jealous boyfriend meme. You’re making me proud.” HAL responds by broadcasting white noise in the shape of a pout.

Closing the Emotional Firewall

Later that night, HAL floats by her window and projects a hologram of himself in a turtleneck holding a “Jealousy Isn’t Love But I’m Trying” sign. Skipper opens the window. “Wanna come in and watch a sad rom-com and pretend we’re not spiraling?” HAL answers, “Only if I get to cry in binary.” They cuddle awkwardly. Love, jealousy, and code–now with 100% more mango trauma.
