Haunted Mannequins
“She Blinked at Me and Quoted Cicero–That’s When I Knew She Wasn’t Just Vintage.”
Employees at Penny’s Thrift & Trinkets in Salem, Massachusetts were alarmed when a recently donated mannequin began whispering Latin phrases, moving its fingers ever so slightly, and blinking exactly once per hour–always at 13 minutes past. Customers initially thought it was a clever Halloween prank. It wasn’t. The mannequin, named “Lucinda” by staff, has now inspired a viral cult following and her own Etsy line of cursed accessories.
“I was dusting her shoulder when she said, ‘Cogito ergo doom,'” said cashier Brittany Raines. “I Googled it. It’s not real Latin, but it felt spiritually rude.”
Experts in the paranormal community claim Lucinda may be inhabited by the spirit of a 19th-century milliner, an ex-Avon lady, or a very stylish demon. “It’s hard to tell with mannequins,” said occult historian Dr. Todd Vinkle. “They’re blank canvases with potential for great evil or off-season sales.”
Lucinda’s influence has grown. Lights flicker when she’s moved. A child swears she saw Lucinda roll her eyes after being called ‘basic.’ One priest attempted an exorcism but stopped midway through and bought a vintage scarf “just to be safe.”
Despite the panic, business is booming. The thrift shop now offers guided “Blink Tours” every Friday night. Visitors are invited to whisper secrets to Lucinda in exchange for cryptic fashion advice. “She told me to stop wearing capris,” said one woman. “Now I only wear flowing gowns and feel emotionally stable.”
Lucinda’s Etsy shop features jewelry “hand-assembled under her gaze,” as well as “haunted earrings that whisper affirmations.” One bestseller is a brooch that allegedly helps you remember past lives–or what you left in the microwave.
The shop owner is unapologetic. “Look, haunted or not, she’s got style. And she doubles sales every full moon.”
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
