Misfit Book Clubs
“We Started with Nora Roberts. Now We’re Drafting a Manifesto.”
What began as a suburban book club for light romance novels has spiraled into a full-blown dystopian conspiracy cell, complete with code names, bunker plans, and a laminated flowchart titled *Treasonous Librarians & How to Spot Them.* The Turning Pages Society, originally founded by retirees and yoga moms, now meets in secrecy and reviews books with red string and corkboards.
“It was *The Handmaid’s Tale* that broke us,” said founding member Brenda. “Then someone suggested *1984*, and the next thing we knew, we were ordering encrypted walkie-talkies.”
The group’s weekly meetings include book discussions, drills, and decoding passages of Nicholas Sparks for hidden government signals. Their group chat was recently flagged by an algorithm for overusing the phrase “resistance romance.”
New members are required to pass a loyalty quiz and submit a haiku about surveillance. Brenda says it “helps weed out the Hallmark infiltrators.”
At least one member, Doris, now claims she sees the librarian as “an operative of the Dewey Decentralization Directive.” She’s begun organizing anti-indexing protests at the local library’s book drop.
Despite the shift in tone, snacks remain consistent–mainly carrot cake and conspiratorial quiche.
The group plans to self-publish their own thriller titled *Chapter Nine Was a Lie.*
Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
