Activists Accuse Peace Icon of Perpetuating “Verbal Hegemony” and Silencing Rage
PORTLAND, OR — A planned lecture by Mahatma Gandhi on the principles of nonviolence was disrupted when Antifa protesters erected a blockade outside the venue, chanting “Talking is violence!” and accusing the peace icon of perpetuating “verbal hegemony.”
The protest, which began peacefully, escalated after Gandhi began speaking, with attendees reporting being drowned out by chants and megaphone blasts demanding “action, not abstraction.”
“Nonviolence is just another way to mute marginalized rage,” said a masked protester known only as Echo. “When words oppress, silence and fury must fill the space.”
Gandhi attempted to mediate, inviting protesters to join in a moment of collective breath, but was met with skepticism and calls to “deconstruct the breath.”
Organizers expressed concern that the protest overshadowed the message of peace and reconciliation, but activists insisted that “talking about peace” without dismantling power structures is performative and harmful.
After the event was shut down, Gandhi retreated to a nearby park where he led a small group in silent reflection, reportedly whispering, “True violence is the refusal to listen.”
The incident underscores ongoing debates within activist circles about the efficacy of dialogue versus direct confrontation in achieving social justice.
