Giant Avocado Balloon Declared Sovereign Nation; UN Issues Statement
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — A massive inflatable avocado used during Saturday’s protest has formally declared independence and now claims to be “the legitimate governing body of greater Echo Park.” The green entity, nicknamed El Avo-Libre, was originally intended as a cheeky visual protest against food insecurity—but after being inflated with helium, revolution, and blind optimism, it took on a political life of its own.
“We recognize no borders, only brunch,” announced a spokesperson for the balloon-nation, who was wearing a ceremonial headband made of kale stems. The United Nations issued a cautious statement acknowledging “the symbolic sovereignty of produce-based microstates during times of civil unrest.”
The balloon floated several blocks north, drawing cheers from protestors and concern from the FAA. Residents of Silver Lake have reportedly sworn allegiance to El Avo-Libre, citing “aesthetic alignment” and “good fats.” A miniature embassy has been set up inside an artisanal soap shop.
Attempts to deflate the balloon have failed, as every needle thrown at it has bounced off, blocked by layers of millennial symbolism and natural rubber.
“Avocados have always represented generational guilt, food-based revolution, and not being able to afford a home,” said sociologist Dr. Lena Rios. “It was only a matter of time before one ran for office.”
The balloon has already applied for IMF recognition and trademarked the phrase “Guac and Rule.”
