Wichita Falls Denies Allegations That Their Prairie Dogs Are Just Shaved Raccoons
WICHITA FALLS, TX — APRIL 2025 — The Wichita Falls Petting Zoo has found itself in the eye of a follicular scandal this week, as allegations swirl that its beloved prairie dog colony may, in fact, be an elaborate raccoon disguise operation.
A viral TikTok posted by a suspicious 8-year-old named Brantley accused the zoo of “shaving raccoons and giving them groundhog names.” The video, which features what appears to be a raccoon blinking in Morse code for help, has amassed 2.7 million views and triggered an investigation by the Texas Department of Zoological Authenticity.
“It Blinked With Intent”
Brantley, who describes himself as a “junior wildlife truth detective,” told local reporters: “That ain’t no prairie dog. I know a raccoon when I see one. It blinked like it had a plan. Prairie dogs don’t have plans. They just squeak and dig.”
Zoo director Lesley Honker dismissed the accusations as “preposterous and deeply insulting to our rodent community,” insisting the animals were “certified prairie dogs with proper documentation, union dues, and emotional support tunnels.”
TikTok Sleuths Join In
Thousands of amateur zoologists and conspiracy enthusiasts have since descended upon the comment section with theories ranging from “budget cuts forced a species merger” to “prairie dog population replaced by raccoon deepfakes funded by Big Fur.”
One viral comment read: “Those dogs got raccoon eyes and a raccoon soul. Wake up, sheeple.”
Prairie Dog Union Fires Back
The Prairie Dog Local 419 issued a press release declaring solidarity with their possibly raccoonesque brethren, stating: “We don’t care who you were before the shave. If you dig, squeak, and snack on sunflower seeds, you’re family.”
They’ve since organized a march entitled “Fur is Just a Costume: Let Us Dig in Peace.”
Expert Opinion
Dr. Cordelia Primm, zoologist and author of The Raccoon Within: America’s Hidden Trash Pandas, offered cautious analysis: “It is scientifically plausible for raccoons to masquerade as prairie dogs, especially in areas with low oversight and high snack density.”
She pointed to a 1998 case in which three squirrels impersonated lemurs in a Louisiana petting zoo for four months. “The key giveaway was their refusal to respect lemur union break times.”
The Hat Test
In an effort to quell suspicion, the zoo invited visitors to conduct what they called the “Hat Test.” Prairie dogs, they argued, will attempt to burrow under any hat placed on the ground, whereas raccoons will try to sell the hat on Craigslist.
Out of 25 tests conducted, 18 hats were burrowed under, 5 were urinated on, and 2 are currently listed on Facebook Marketplace under the title: “Vintage Felt, Lightly Nibbled.”
A Raccoon Named Steve?
Fueling the controversy is a photo snapped by an elderly zoo docent of a “prairie dog” sipping from a straw and scrolling an iPad. The animal’s enclosure is labeled simply “Steve.”
Zoo officials claim the sign was part of an enrichment experiment in which prairie dogs were given human names and encouraged to express their “inner influencer.”
Merch Backlash
The zoo’s gift shop, previously praised for its diverse array of stuffed rodents, has now been accused of stocking raccoon plushies in prairie dog T-shirts. The items have been pulled pending DNA tests.
Meanwhile, online resale of the now-controversial plush toys has surged, with one eBay listing titled: “RARE: Misclassified Zoo Animal. Possibly Endangered. Probably Steve.”
Political Ramifications
Local councilman Terry Futz has called for an emergency town meeting to discuss “Rodent Transparency and Accountability.”
“This is Wichita Falls, damn it. We don’t lie about our animals. We name them, overfeed them, and take pride in their mediocrity,” said Futz, before challenging the zoo director to a public DNA duel.
Community Divided
Some residents have rallied behind the zoo, sporting shirts that read “I Believe Steve,” and organizing a fundraiser called “Shave a Raccoon for Justice.”
Others have begun referring to the zoo as “The Fur Swap Meet” and launched a Change.org petition demanding an independent fur audit.
