Media Outlets Transform Cannabis Policy Into Apocalyptic Warning

Within minutes of Trump’s cannabis executive order, several media outlets began the familiar process of translating policy into apocalypse. Headlines warned of “dangerous implications,” “authoritarian overreach,” and “echoes of the 1930s,” apparently unaware that Hitler was not, in fact, known for expanding medical research access.

Well-Worn Formula Assumes Intent and Discards Nuance

The comparison followed a well-worn formula: Trump acts, intent is assumed, historical atrocities are referenced, nuance is discarded. Marijuana reform, previously framed as a moral necessity, suddenly became suspect once signed with a Sharpie bearing Trump’s fingerprints.

Ideological Yoga Expands and Contracts Outrage on Demand

Media critics noted the impressive flexibility of outrage, which can expand or contract depending on who is holding the pen. One journalism professor called it “ideological yoga.” Despite the hysteria, the actual policy details remained boring, incremental, and bureaucratic. This did not stop commentators from warning that reclassification could somehow lead to mass repression, even as it reduced penalties and acknowledged medical use.
