Poorly Timed Fireworks

“Will You Marry Me? Also, RIP Mr. Snuffles.”

In what locals are calling the most emotionally confusing moment of the decade, Jeffery Polanski proposed to longtime girlfriend Tina Barrow during what he believed was a Fourth of July fireworks show–unaware that the display was actually part of a public memorial for a deceased therapy cat named Mr. Snuffles. The cat, who comforted hundreds at the town’s senior center, had passed the week before and been honored with a 20-minute firework tribute at his favorite park.

“I timed the proposal for the finale,” Jeffery said. “Big heart-shaped fireworks, she gasps, I kneel. Perfect.”

Except Tina wasn’t gasping from romance. She was mid-tear during the reading of “In Memory of Snuffles,” a poem involving catnip, purring, and “the courage to love again after loss.”

Unaware of the cat context, Jeffery launched into his speech. “I knew you were the one from the moment you shared your chicken nuggets…” he began, just as a slideshow of Mr. Snuffles’s finest cardigan photos played on a giant screen.

When he pulled out the ring, a mourner in the front row screamed, “Have you no shame?! The ashes aren’t even cooled!”

The crowd quickly divided. Some booed. Some wept harder. One elderly woman whispered, “Well, it’s what Snuffles would’ve wanted–love wins.”

Tina, overwhelmed, said yes out of confusion and social pressure. She later clarified, “I thought it was a metaphor. I thought *I* was Mr. Snuffles.”

Jeffery attempted to apologize at the candlelit vigil but was turned away after knocking over the photo shrine and stepping on a bowl of ceremonial kibble.

Social media exploded. #ProposalPaws trended on Twitter. The couple received both death threats and wedding venue offers. Jeffery has since written an op-ed for the local paper titled “Love in the Time of Fur.”

Mr. Snuffles’s ashes were later scattered at sunrise by a 12-piece recorder ensemble. Jeffery was not invited.

Auf Wiedersehen, amigos.
